Secrets of Success: Philosophy Applied to Poker

Date: May 29, 2008

In a podcast discussion, a man said that the correct attitude in playing Poker - the one you should always strive to have - is that you are always even when the hand begins. No matter what has happened previously - play your hand for what it’s worth now.

He made sure to make a mental note to follow his own advice. It is sound advice - one of those things that’s easy to grasp intellectually, but damned hard to put into practice as players unconsciously and constantly struggle with the concept.

It’s never easy to see your play as one long Poker game. Engaging in some deep Poker pondering this week the speaker put all his efforts to understand game theory,

He said that he was re-reading a discussion of applications of game theory and ended up pondering Emmanuel Kant’s categorical imperative which states:

“Act only on such a maxim through which you can at the same time will that it should become a universal law”

While the intention behind the imperative is aimed at the principles of morality, it got him to wondering what would happen if it was applied to the decisions we are faced with when playing poker. Was it even applicable? The following example of Kant’s imperative he mentioned further intrigued me.

“Always borrow money when in need and promise to pay it back without any intention of keeping the promise”

If you try to follow this maxim logically, you will discover that, whereas this maxim is beneficial to the individual, it cannot be regarded as a universal law - everyone would then be insincere that people would break promises, making them irrelevant, therefore they’d cease to exist. This maxim is nothing but a contradiction since, ultimately, it’s not in an individual’s best interest to break the promise. If you can keep a promise, why will you break it?

But is there a dictum for a Poker player to act on that given that he is willed, could become a universal “Poker” law? For the Poker player it’s naturally his individual interest to try to make the correct decision on each hand. It is not in his vested interest for his opponents to do the same. Success in Poker is dependent upon making wise +EV decisions while your opponents make -EV mistakes. If everyone is making the “correct” play all the time then, theoretically, at best you will break even over the long term. Right?

Poker, then, i assume, would seem to require a little chaos and unpredictability in order for the individual to achieve ongoing gain. Therefore, Kant’s categorical imperative isn’t applicable.

Even so, if you think about how far you have reached when it comes to playing Poker, philosophizing the events and strategy you employed will really help since thinking deep about it will not only motivate you more to do well in a game, it will also help you understand your who or what you are in relation to Poker.

Secrets of Success: Best Poker Players Revealed their State of Mind

Date: May 16, 2008

If you are wondering what runs in the mind of an Online Poker champion, this post is for you.

ACTING IS A PREREQUISITE IN POKER

To be a champion Poker player, means to know how to hide your anxieties and emotions. The best Poker players are actors. They cannot afford to be transparent, or else they will blow away their chances in winning. Pretending is part of a Poker player’s life. Poker is a game where emotional stability is a must. You cannot afford to be upset just because another player is winning. You cannot afford to be upset just because you are losing. You must take losing as a challenge. These are the things you have to consider if you want to have a successful Poker career.

Poker is not dependent on a single day. It is something you have to work hard for, just like a job. So long as you like playing the same game in a single day, the harder it is to win. The fact is when players achieve a position of being able to win, they are usually gambling on something else, something they like to do. Poker is all about money, if you like playing so much then it would not be a job.

SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST

Predation is something you have to expect in Poker world. You must know how to kill or you will be killed. Of course, you have the option to choose your unfortunate prey, the most common prey though are the fresh meats in the world of Online Poker. Hello, as if someone will dare to pass up on a fresh meat.

IT IS OKAY TO LOSE

The best players are those who have entered a losing streak at least once. When you are bound to lose, there is nothing that you can do that is right. Players are not judged on how they play when they are winning, but the other way around. You do not judge a person when he is winning since winning can easily deceive people. The right way to judge a person’s ability to play Poker is by seeing and knowing how he loses his money. If he is always getting sucked out, you know he is a winner even though he is losing. If he is always sucking out when he is winning, he will soon be on the rail.

Losing in playing professional poker are enormous to most people, including the professionals themselves. Obviously many of us have had losing streaks and decided to make sure it never happened again. Nothing beats studying Poker strategies and reading Poker Reviews in order for you to ensure that your losing chance will be minimal.

No one but yourself can ensure victory. Staying strong mentally and playing with a clear mind is a must in order to win consistently. Those who do not stay mentally focused will eventually lose. Though Poker today is seen as cash and fame. The days of real Poker, where it is about taking part and not really about cash, are over.

www.best-poker-site-reviews.com came to existance

Date: April 12, 2008

Better late than never.

Finally I manage to put my thoughts into action and created my own Poker Room Review website http://www.best-poker-site-reviews.com to be one point resources for all the stuff which go in Poker World.

Poker scene is hot and it will soon become the next big phenomenon. Ban in USA is boon for EU and rest of the world specially in UK, where it is perfectly legal. With due permission from the authorities now Poker advertisements started to appear everywhere. The boring InsureAndGo (sic) type ads are now replaced by glamorous and sexy ads on the Underground. They are on TV also and not to mention in other forms of media advertisements.

Well the million pounds question is why on the Internet I need to create another poker review website?

Answer lies in the existance of such websites itself. Most of them are not-so-unbiased even if they claim. Come on everyone know it, it is a money business and big money is involved in this game of cards known as Poker. So most of the review sites become paid-unbiased-review sites eventually.

You will, probably, never get any honest and truly unbiased Poker review websites.

And this is the place where my hard work comes into existance. Though the website is pretty static I’m going to make it one of the best out there :) just hand on for few more days ad you will see its full charm.

Plans are to add our own Poker Blog, a Poker Forum, Poker live news, live event tracker and many more.

Here we come….
:)
